Teaching Children About
Man’s Best Friend
by Peggy Lane
The “Don’t Be a Litterbug.”
campaign when I was a kid
was very successful. My sis-
ters and I heard the message and reminded our
parents not to be litterbugs. Remembering that,
I decided to teach pet care to the children of San
Felipe. Having been an English teacher involved
with kids for 33 years, I
wrote a book aimed at chil-
dren, grades kindergarten
through third grade, and
named it “Amiga Joins
the Family” (“Amiga se
une la Familia”). A young
artist, Karen Altunar from
San Felipe, is providing the
illustrations. The 16-page book, written in Spanish
and English, teaches about pet care. This Novem-
ber, Liz Gonzalez Musello,
owner of Reconnection
Therapeutic Spa, and I
will speak to the children
at six schools in San Felipe about having pets and how
to care for them. Each child will be given a copy of the
book. In the 11 years I have lived here, I have been
involved with the San Felipe Dog Rescue and SNIP.
While these organizations have helped our communi-
ty learn about pet care through various activities, we
thought talking with the children and presenting them with our illustrated book
would be another way to help.
Note If you would like to help offset the price of printing, Peggy will be putting contain-
ers with a picture of the book in Sunrunner, Road Runner, The Brewery, Alex’s House,
and on the SNIIP table at the Swap Meet. The cost for a 16-page, full-color book,
times 1200 copies is $2500 USD. 25
