The reason for this is that the wing size determines speed, the longer the wing
span the slower the flight because of drag. I use my slow wings for recreational
tours and faster wings for longer trips. As far as the engines, my current engines
are a 65 HP and a 600 CC ROTAX engines. I use ROTAX engines as those are
certified for my aircraft. I must make sure the maintenance is followed as mandat-
ed for my aircraft which means that after every 25hr of use it has to have a general
check, and that certain components get changed on schedule to avoid possible
failure. All maintenance must be done by a certified ROTAX aircraft mechanic, as
that person can be liable for any engine failure. As part of the flying adventure, I
shut off the engines when we get to the determind altitude so we can glide, and we
land “dead stick.” For that reason, it is very important that maintenance is done
and all parts of the aircraft as required. Ultralights works by weight shifting, that’s
what makes the turns; since my aircraft is a 2-axel aircraft it limits flying in cross
winds as I cannot land on cross winds over 15 knots. That means I have to land
in front of the wind, which is also the reason why today I could not meet you in the
original place we agreed upon. It would have been risky due to the cross winds.

With those last words I smile, I totally get why we had to change the meeting point,
safety should always be first. I thank Rafa for taking the time to tell me all about him-
self and ultra-lighting. The passion for what he does is quite evident by the way he
speaks about it. Now, I think is time for this writer to take a leap and take an Ultralight
flight……on second thought, maybe another day!
