In the mid 1950’s and early 1960’s travelers
discovered Campo Limon. The Campo
quickly became a popular spot for fishermen,
local and foreigners alike, because of its
prime location, access to water and electric-
ity, and easy access into the Sea of Cortez.
At the time, Club de Pesca had the first,
and only, boat launch. Fishermen began
to launch their boats daily from the campo,
referring to it as “Club de Pesca.” The totoaba were plentiful in the 1960’s and
many fishermen returned with an abundance of totoaba from their day of fishing in
the area. Though the campo was initially
just that, a campground, travelers began
leaving their campers and mobile homes
permanently. In addition to fishing, Club
de Pesca became popular for the annual
sail boat regatta in the 1970’s. Sr. Limon
retired in the 1970’s and moved to San
Diego, CA leaving his grown children to
oversee Club de Pesca. He passed away
in San Diego in 1989. Today, the Limon
family remains influential in the community. Jorge’s nephew, Francisco Carrasco
Hernandez, currently sits on the San Felipe City Council. His brother Pepe, while
no longer with us, worked closely with SCORE and encouraged them to bring off
road racing to San Felipe. He was close personal friends of Sal Fish from SCORE
and convinced him to bring the 250 to San Felipe. The first S. F. 250 was in 1982.
My family discovered Club de Pesca when my dad brought us camping here in
1971. We loved it so much that my parents bought a “permanente” and we have
been here ever since. In my teenage years, the Tienda Limon was a popular night
time hang out for local and visiting teens, we played pool and listened to music
from our boom boxes & on occasion went dancing to the juke box at the Miramar Hotel. 43
