San Felipe is a fishing town, at one time plentiful with totoaba,
      Historically
corvina and shrimp. Today it remains a popular fishing site, also a popular spot for
      tourists, travelers, and off roaders.
      San Felipe began incorporating in
      1925. Development boomed after
      the completion of the Mexicali-San
Felipe highway in 1951. One of the
pioneers of the development of San
Felipe as a popular destination for
      foreign travelers was Jose Her-
nandez Limon, founder of Club de
Pesca, just south of town. I had the
pleasure of interviewing Sr. Limon’s son, Jorge Limon, current owner of Club de
Pesca, whom I have known most of my life. As we sat outside the Tienda Limon,
looking out over the Sea of Cortez with a light breeze blowing, Jorge shared his
childhood memories with me growing up in Calexico and San Felipe. Jorge is ful-
                                              ly bilingual, having studied political
                                              science at UCLA. Jorge’s father,
                                              Jose Hernandez Limon, was born
                                              in Chihuahua, Mexico. After
                                              completing his upper education at
Texas A&M, he became a leader in
the cotton industry in Mexicali. Jose
had 6 children: Juan Jose (“Pepe”),
                                              Alicia, Leticia, Jorge, Pancho and
Pepito. In the early 1950’s he ar-
rived in San Felipe and purchased
                                              land, including the beautiful beach
                                              front property that was originally
                                              known as “Campo Limon.” Sr.
                                              Limon and others approached the
                                              Mexican government and pled for
financial support to help San Felipe
  42 acquire electricity and water.
