JEAN AND HER PEN
In 1998
Jean Breslin was living in Willcox, Arizona. One day she saw an
advertisement for personalized pens from the National Pen Company. Thinking these
would make a great gift for her grandchildren, she placed an order. When they ar-
rived, not only did she receive the pens, but also included
was a certificate saying had won a lot in San Felipe, Baja
California, Mexico. Assuming it was a scam, Jean set the
certificate aside and didn’t give it another thought.
A month later, a friend of Jeans from Oklahoma City called and
said she also had won
a lot in Mexico from Na-
tional Pen Company.
Neither of the women
had ever heard of San
Felipe, so they decided to take a trip together with
their husbands to see what they had won.
When they arrived in San Felipe, they were taken
on a tour of the El Dorado Ranch. At that time,
the only construction that had happened was a
seaside pool, a restaurant on the beach and a
parking lot for motor homes. The beach was not
cleared but it was getting started. Next came a
trip to their lot where they discovered that it was
in the mountains, overlooking the airport. They
decided they weren’t interested in building on
their new piece of Mexican property. There were
other lots available for purchase on the mountain
side of El Dorado Ranch, but at that time, there
were no lots for sale on the sea side.
Jean wanted to live near the beach but decided to keep her free lot as it allowed her
access and use of the amenities on the ranch for 20 years. All that was required was
an annual payment of just $28 a year for property taxes.
In 1995 Jean and her husband leased 2 lots in Campo Ocotillo near the water and
added a trailer to their property. In 2005 they built a home where they moved in
permanently upon retirement.
Jean is grateful to the National Pen Company for the free lot they received as it brought
her to the beaches of San Felipe and a Mexican way of life she truly loves.
