in pursuit of the elusive catch that will keep them afloat. And his goal is to assist them in re-
ceiving the benefits they are entitled to. So, on Oct 3rd the Mexico Department of Fisheries
office, CONAPESCA, authorized the beginning of the Shrimp season. I hung out with Capt.
Rodrigo Lopez and his team, learning about the netting, which they string by hand. This
netting is smaller in order to catch the shrimp. The best part of being an apprentice with this
Panga Crew was getting to picking some choice shrimp to take home.

For the panga fishermen, there is no greater pride than the satisfaction
that comes with a successful day’s work, and no greater joy than the
sense of camaraderie that comes from sharing the sea with fellow
fishermen. They are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit,
and a reminder that in the face of adversity, there is always hope.
