A Harmonious
Color Scheme in the
World of Fantasy
I discovered Breeze’s cover painting by
Elizaveta Newinnaia, while visiting the
art exhibition at Rosarios. She is an in-
ternational artist visiting San Felipe from
her home in Kaluga, a small town about
180kms from Moscow. Her paintings
caught my attention and I purchased our
cover as a personal favorite. I got a chance to chat with her to find out a bit more
about our visiting artist.
She explains that her art is a combination of the real world and the realm of fantasy.
“It is a mixture of how it is, with how it could be.” In her world people fly, the earth and
sky come to life, the small become big and the fragile become strong.
Elizaveta, was inspired by her parents and at the age of two, starting to express
herself in painting. Her mother was an acknowledged ceramic artist and her father a
jeweler. They traveled through europe, hence instilling in Elizaveta a gypsy life style
to travel the world, which she still enjoys. While traveling through India she connect-
ed with Igor, a custom jewelry designer, also Rusian now residing in San Diego.
Together they started traveling as a collaborating team, “He brings his tools and I
bring mine and we organize something like a laboratory of art.” she smiles
Her work contains poetry and allegory, Serious topics are revealed in a light, playful,
sometimes in an ironic form. She explains “My paintings are not illustrations in the
literal sense. The text is hidden in the plot. I like to talk to the audience by leaving
hints in small details.”
She opens her notebook where she sketches her everyday life adventure to inspire
perhaps a new painting. As she turn the pages I see several ink rendition of Ralf’s
ultralight plane, when I asked if she actually had experience the flight, she exclaimed,
“Oh yes! I am a bit afraid of planes, but with Ralf I felt calm, it was an amazing expe-
rience, the view is beautiful, it was a very deep and philosophical moment for me.”
