Of the over 40 names submitted to Breeze to name our cover
boat, painted by Philip van Rensburg. We chose La Chalupa,
submitted by Oracio Agramonp, which is a small boat, usually
rowed or poled, similar to a gondola. In the 16th century, when
Spanish conquerors arrived in Central Mexico they found a
city floating on a large lake named Tenochtitlan (Mexico City),
The Aztecs had developed the city into a system of gardens and farming parcels,
seemingly floating on the many lakes. These man-made plots created neat networks of
canals, easily managed by the locals in small boats
that the Spaniards called chalupas. They were
used to connect and transport both human cargo
and produce from the chinampas to the flourishing
market in Tenochtitlan, and seed, soil and sup-
plies back to the parcels. Today you can still see
them today in the Xochimico Lake, adorned with
flowers, and mariachi bands to serenade you, a
great day trip, definitely have lunch on one.
